Norfolk Gazelles present the Alex Moore Relay - 9th June 2024

The Alex Moore Relay is back! Once again, we’ll be at the Goat in Skeyton and we really look forward to welcoming teams from across East Anglia to this fun, relaxed event.

Running clubs, groups of friends and workplace teams can bring along their gazebos, flags, deckchairs etc and really feel the “big day out” vibe.

The format

This is a relay race around the village of Skeyton for teams of three. Runner one, 1 lap (2.2 miles); runner two, 2 laps (4.4 miles); runner three, two laps (4.4 miles); then all three runners complete a final lap as a team (2.2 miles). Each team completes a half-marathon.

The race starts at 9.30am (please note, this is earlier than previous years).

Batons and timing

Each team will receive a baton on the day, which will record your team’s total time at every crossing of the start/finish line (i.e. at the end of each leg). Results will be recorded for each leg, so you can decide who runs which leg and in which order on the day, without having to change your registration.  You do not need to inform us if you are changing the order of your team.

How to register

The team organiser should register their team via TotalRaceTiming.  Each team must have a unique name, but you don’t need to register runners at the time of registration – you just need to enter the team name, the club (if applicable), the category of the team and the contact details of the team organiser.  Note that the team organiser can be an organiser for more than one team, and they do not need to necessarily run the relay on race day.  Hence one person could register, say, 5 teams for their club without having to specify any runners at registration – they would need to specify unique team names however.

All correspondence leading up to the race will be via the team organisers.

On race day each team will need to complete a simple form stating each runner’s name, address, age, gender, emergency contact details and any disabilities – so that we have a record should anything unfortunate happen on the route.  Without receiving this information on the day, we will not be able to release the chip baton.

If you make any changes on the day that alter the category of your team, you must tell us at the point of picking up the baton – if you are not sure of the new category we will place your team in the men’s open category.

The route

The race starts at the Goat Inn pub and runners head out up Black Horse Road. At the junction, turn left on to Church Road and follow the road up to the church, where you turn left down Long Road, back down to the pub. (This road will be closed during the race.)

There will be marshals around the course to alert traffic to the race and also to ensure runners keep to the left at all times.

The venue

The Goat Inn is a fabulous pub with a lovely outdoor space. Tea and coffee will be available from 9am in the pub and the landlords will be serving a hog roast later. However, car parking is limited, so please car-share as much as you can.

Bring along your gazebos and flags -- there's plenty of room by the finish line to pitch up.

Categories and prizes

There will be medals for all finishers and trophies for first place in each category.

There are five categories: Ladies’ open, Men’s open, Men’s masters, Ladies’ masters and mixed.

Open is defined as one or more runner under 40 years old.

Masters is defined as all runners 40 years and above.

Mixed teams must contain at least one male and one female runner (of any age).

The minimum age for competitors is 14 years.

History

Alex Moore was a former Norfolk Gazelle who died in a skydiving accident in 2003 at the age of 24, leaving a fiancée, Clare Neve. An RAF Corporal, originally from Caterham in Surrey, Alex was a talented runner who joined Norfolk Gazelles in 2001. To celebrate Alex's life, Norfolk Gazelles set up the Alex Moore Memorial Relay in 2004. The race is run over one of Alex's regular training routes, close to the former RAF Coltishall, where he was based. There is also a bench on the Marriott's Way to remember Alex and the training runs he shared along this route with his fellow Norfolk Gazelles.
